(2) There were 103 students (in the regular program
and any alternative

programs) who were in programs of supervised student teaching
during
the academic year 1999-2000.

There
were two full-time appointed faculty in professional education who
supervised student teachers.
There
were ten part-time appointed faculty in professional education
who supervised student teachers.
There
was a total of twelve supervising faculty for the teacher
preparation program.

student faculty ratio for supervised student teaching was 8:1.

was a minimum of 30 hours per week of student participation
in
supervised student teaching. There were 15 weeks of required
supervised
student teaching. The minimum number of required hours
was 450
hours.

All teacher certification programs are currently approved by the
Maryland State Department of Education. It is also approved by the
National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

performing” by the state ( as per section 208(a) of the HEA of 1998).
SECTION III – Contextual Information
At UMBC, you find dynamic, nationally known faculty who

be learning from and with some of the very best.
In this setting, UMBC offers professional programs
leading to certification from the State of Maryland in Early Childhood (birth
through grade 3), Elementary Education (grades 1-8) Secondary Education
(middle/high school) and English as a Second Language.
TEACHER EDUCATION AT UMBC
UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE
The undergraduate teacher education program at UMBC
requires the completion of an academic major, general foundation courses and a
professional sequence leading to certification in the State of Maryland. The graduate education program requires a
baccalaureate degree and a completion of a sequence of professional courses
leading to certification.

The programs incorporate extensive field experiences
and extended internships for students.
Students participate in Professional Development Schools that serve as a
link between theory, research and school practices. All UMBC teacher education programs have been reviewed and
approved by the Maryland State Department of Education, and are accredited by
the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Graduates of the program may become
certified in over 30 states through reciprocity agreements.
